POLLUTION AS A NATIONAL CANKER; THE VARIOUS FORMS

Pollution is one of the major cankers that human beings have to deal with in their life time. Ghana is one of the countries that is prone with excess pollutants.

Pollution is the release of harmful substances into the environment and atmosphere at large. The substances that are being released into the environment include smoke, sulphur dioxide gas, carbon monoxide gas, untreated sewage, polythene bags, plastic bottles and other chemicals. Land, water and air are all embedded in the environment and as such, can also be polluted.

Air pollution as the name suggests is the release of gases, dust, smoke, fumes or odour in amounts which could be harmful to the health or comfort of humans and animals as well as plants and materials. The air that is polluted is considered impure hence it has adverse effects on living things.

This is because; humans, animals and plants that are the living organisms depend on the clean air, in other words oxygen for survival.

As humans, there are certain activities we perform that ends up harming the land we live on and the soil. The land can be polluted either by household garbage or industrial waste. The rate at which lands are been used in Ghana for our selfish gains or interest leads to its pollution one way or the other.

When the land which is a habitat to both living and non-living things is polluted then, the water that passes through the land can as well be polluted. Water pollution which is another type of pollution is simply when water is contaminated as a result of certain human activities. Rivers, streams, lakes, ground water and sea becomes impure due to its contact with both solid and liquid waste.

One may argue that, noise cannot be seen or smelt therefore isn’t harmful. Sounds coming from planes, industries or other sources succeed in causing harm to the environment thereby can be listed as a type of pollution. care must taken in order not to expose ourselves to such forms of pollution.
